Yorkshire Gentlemen YGCC v Free Foresters on Sun 02 Aug 2009 at 11:30
Yorkshire Gentlemen Won by 19 runs
Match report
In all the years of playing cricket I have never ,ever, come across anyone who has 'retired, broken bat,'.James Dakin having broken his bat a couple of balls before lunch then drove home to get another bat(round trip 90 mins)and resumed at the fall of the next wicket. He assured us that no other bat will do.
In the meantime a thoroughly good cricket match ensued with YG's batting first and posting 194-4, FF replied with 194-4 at stumps and a dilemma regarding a declaration that I am assured could only be solved following the vast intake of alcohol. However arriving at the ground blight eyed and bleary tailed FF declared and YG's set of to set a target which happened to be 194 again! Ferdy Reynolds bowled very tidily and picked up a couple of wickets at the end including brother George who appeared not best pleased but was too apoplectic to speak! FF altered the batting order to ensure that all had had a bat.Runs and wickets came at regular intervals including two bizarre ones off the boot of Richard Reynolds. The first was when trying to field a drive of his own bowling the ball deflected off his boot and on to the stumps with the batsman stranded. It's a shame that the victim was his son Ferdy who had yet to face a ball! Two overs later, just to show it was not a fluke, the hands missed the ball again and the same result occured. FF chased the runs right to the end when YG skipper held the final catch to give the home side victory by a mere 19 runs. I think most would have settled for a tie at 194! A really good match, great pleasure to play in and tremendous opposition who played the game in just the right spirit on and off the pitch. Looking forwaard to next year already.
